No, that isn't the sad part. Knowing how long it's been since someone told you they loved you...that's what I found to be sad.
I suppose that's not a bad approach to caring for another person...bedside manner might suffer (I have no idea what yours would be like; I assume quiet) but it also suggests that you would be hard pressed to get something wrong, or screw up in any way, as you wouldn't be as distracted by connecting with the patient.
